Stopping distance calculator.

Work out the thinking, braking and overall stopping distance for a car at any speed, using the standard UK Highway Code figures.

40 mph
Thinking distance12 m
Braking distance24 m
Stopping distance36 m (118 ft)

Based on the Highway Code figures for a typical car and driver. Always allow extra distance at night, in rain, ice or snow.

How it works

Stopping distance is your thinking distance plus your braking distance. The Highway Code figures estimate thinking distance at about one foot per mile per hour, and braking distance as a square of the speed, so braking distance grows much faster as speed increases.

The most important thing to remember: doubling your speed roughly quadruples your braking distance.
